Kinja'd!!!

There’s racing. There’s TUSC, F1, etc. Then there’s BTCC. Damn!

I watched my first BTCC race today, and holy shit was that entertaining and some great racing going on. While I love (and ALWAYS will) GT Le Mans style racing, the BTCC race was amazingly fun to watch. Contact all over the place, battles for every position, and some genuinely skillful maneuvering (with some skillful but also very lucky saves too!).

Why don’t people talk about this more???

Go watch V8 Supercars. Right now. You’ll love it.

Because in the US it gets like 0 coverage unfortunately. I haven’t seen a race since 2012 and I hate myself for that.

BTCC is awesome, but as norskracer89 put it, there’s no coverage in the US.

I love the BTCC, but it just hasn’t had a good media presence. Even when Speed was a network it had crappy time slots.

I love BTCC, but like everyone else says, no US coverage.

Also, this reminds me...does anyone here remember the North American Touring Car Championship ? Probably not, given how short lived and unsuccessful it ended up being.

But even though it only lasted for 2 years, and there weren’t many cars in each race (most races in the 96 season had 11 or 12 cars, 97 usually had 9 or 10 in a race), it was pretty awesome, with some names that many of us are familiar with: Rod Millen, Peter Cunningham, Darren Law, David Donohue...along with an interesting variety of cars, including some that aren’t sold in the US.

The 1996 season had the following cars: Toyota Carina E, Honda Accord, BMW 320i, Ford Mondeo, Mercedes-Benz 190E, Dodge Stratus, Vauxhall Cavalier, Ford Contour, and Pontiac Sunfire.

The 1997 season’s cars were the returning 320i, Stratus, Contour, Accord, and Sunfire, plus the Mazda Xedos 6 and Toyota Camry.

Also, there weren’t a lot of big name tracks in the series. Lime Rock, Laguna Seca, Bell Isle, and Mid-Ohio in the 1996 season, with Lime Rock being replaced with the Long Beach street circuit for the ‘97 season.

Honda won the constructor’s titles both seasons, along with the driver’s title in 1996. The 1997 driver’s title went to Donohue in the Stratus.

Here’s a good look at the inaugural season on video:
